Did You Know? Accessing Health Care Supports in Northumberland
Did you know that there are a number of local programs and services available in Northumberland designed to help residents access care more easily?
Through the Ontario Health Team of Northumberland, health providers are working together to improve how care is delivered across our community. This includes better access to primary care, expanded services for older adults, and stronger mental health supports.
One example is the Rural Outreach Clinic in Colborne, which was established to support residents who may face barriers to accessing care. The clinic offers physician and nurse practitioner appointments, diabetes care, mental health counselling, and family violence prevention support.
In addition, there are ongoing efforts to help residents connect with a family doctor or nurse practitioner. A centralized navigation system, aligned with Health811, is helping people find the right services more quickly, while collaboration with Health Care Connect is aimed at reducing waitlists.
Cancer screening is also being supported through outreach and education. Local initiatives provide access to breast, cervical, colorectal, and lung cancer screening, along with targeted support for individuals who may not currently have a family doctor or who face other barriers to care.
For older adults, a range of supports are available to help maintain independence and well being. These include community paramedicine programs that offer in home care, peer support programs that reduce isolation, and caregiver initiatives that build skills and confidence for those supporting loved ones.
Mental health and addictions services are also more accessible through a public directory that helps residents and families locate local supports quickly and clearly.
These services reflect a coordinated effort across Northumberland to ensure residents can access the care they need closer to home, with a focus on connection, prevention, and community support.
Join us in supporting individuals from all walks of life. Your time and voice can break down systemic barriers.
We champion housing solutions that include everyone. Together, we can remove long-standing access obstacles.
We uplift voices to help communities thrive. Every act of support builds confidence and hope.
Small steps create big impact in inclusive living. Let’s build a world where everyone feels heard.
We partner with local food banks and volunteers to ensure that individuals and families in need can access appropriate meals.
Hi Angela,
I was going to write to you about the concert and your text nudged me to do it today.
What I saw on Saturday, a lovely soft September afternoon, was people coming together to enjoy a beautiful day, and music, and a chance to be with other people in a safe and friendly place. There were people from different races and cultures strolling about and they all looked relaxed and calm; no one looked anxious; strangers smiled at one another and even said Hello! Everyone looked as if they felt they belonged there. In other words, in a picturesque Victorian small town, under the maples changing colour, it was a mythical Canadian moment. So well done!
The Dalmatians of course milked the moment. They love to meet people and people love to meet them. Then there’s a chance for the humans to have a little chat, and there’s a pleasant feeling of connection all around, which I think people take away with them; perhaps they say hello to a stranger or two later. Maybe there need to be official Town dogs who attend events and mingle and spread good feelings.
